Euro 2020 - Round of 16 - Day 1-Saturday 26 June

The knockouts are here! Two matches a day for the next four days before we narrow down to the last 8.

Wales V Denmark kicks off at 1700 from Johan Cruyff Arena, Amsterdam. Live on BBC One, BBC Iplayer and S4C.

These are two teams that qualified by showing an incredible amount of grit and determination. Wales rode their luck a little to draw with Switzerland but put everything they had in each of their group games. They were much the better side against Turkey and worked hard to only lose 1 - 0 to Italy. Italy rested 8 of their first team players in that match but have quality right through their squad so were still a difficult opponent. Wales also played that game with 10 men for 35 minutes. Keeping the score down was significant as conceding any more would have seen Wales finish third and they'd be facing France now instead. Wales will be without the suspended Ethan Ampadu for this one. It will be interesting to see if Coach Rob Page goes with a "False 9" up front as he did with Aaron Ramsey playing up front against Italy. Or will he go with a more focal point with a more recognised striker in Kieffer Moore. Whatever the starting eleven we can be sure that the Welsh will play this game like their lives depend on it. Page is getting the balance right between the talent of players like Bale, James and Ramsey and the spirit and endeavour of players like Moore, Roberts and Morrell. There's a lot of bravery in this team, both physically and in a willingness to take the game to teams. They've already gone further than I expected them to. Can they go further again?

Denmark were completely rocked, understandably, by the collapse of Christian Eriksen in their first game. They did not want to continue that game and ended up losing 1 - 0. A game it's unlikely they would have lost in normal circumstances. In their second game, swept along on a tide of emotion in front of their home fans, they went at Belgium like a battering ram. They scored early through Poulsen only to be beaten by the class of Belgium's play. Losing 2- 1 to the number one team in the world is no disgrace at all. I just felt at the time that they were unlucky in having to face a team of that quality after the turmoiled first game. I was sure it wouldn't be their tournament and they'd be out. However for their third game they married desire and emotion with composure to thrash Russia 4 -1. There were some fantastic goals in that game and again the score was significant because the Danes only qualified on goal difference. Denmark won't have home advantage here with the game being played in Amsterdam. Danish fans have however been given the green light to travel to the Dutch Capital by their Government and by the Netherlands as long as they only stay for 12 hours. Welsh fans however have been told that they will not be permitted into the Country. That seems harsh on Wales as neither the UK or Denmark are on the Netherland's safe list. Wales will have to play with little support in the stadium. Only Welsh fans that currently work or live on the Continent will be able to make this one. This is such a hard game to predict as the teams seem pretty well matched. Both Countries will go at this like it's the last game of their lives so it should be exciting even if it's close.

Frenchfooty prediction: Wales 1 V Denmark 1 - Denmark to win on Penalties.

Italy V Austria - kicks off at 2000 from Wembley Stadium. Live on BBC One and BBC Iplayer.

Italy have probably been the team of the tournament so far. Three wins from three, seven goals scored and none conceded. Roberto Mancini's side are more attacking than they've ever been playing a quick, fluid, passing game with lots of movement. They create lots of chances yet managed to keep the old Calcio principles of organisation and defending strongly. The Azzurri are on unbeaten in 30 games now so it's hard to see Austria getting anything here. In Italy's last game against Wales they dropped eight players yet still won relatively comfortably. They have so many quality players that don't always make the starting 11 like Bellotti, Bastoni and Chiesa. Bastoni may come in here as Captain Giorgio Chiellini is a doubt with a hamstring injury. Italy were without the experience and leadership of PSG midfielder Marco Verratti in their first two games and managed just fine without him. Ciro Immobile should come back in to the side for this game and could well add to the two tournament goals he already has.

Austria did well to get out of an awkward group by beating North Macedonia and Ukraine. I don't see that they are any better than the sides that Italy have beaten easily already though. Austria forward Arnautovic is always a threat and was missed in the loss to the Netherlands. Other than that it's hard to see that this won't be anything but a routine win for Italy.

Frenchfooty prediction: Italy 2 - Austria 0.
